The Inspector General of Police has disbursed over N184 million in life assurance benefits to families of officers who died in active service. The payment, presented in Abuja, is part of efforts to support bereaved families and recognise the sacrifices of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

Support for Families of Fallen Personnel

The Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector General Olatunji Disu, presented a total of N184,889,087.00 to 16 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of officers who lost their lives while on duty.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, the IGP stressed that the payments are not a substitute for the lives lost but a symbolic gesture of remembrance and institutional support.

“A symbol that their sacrifice is valued, and a symbol that we remain committed to supporting those they left behind,” he said.

Call for Improved Welfare and Protection

Disu noted that the event also serves as a moment of reflection for police leadership, urging continued improvements in officer welfare and safety.

He emphasised the need to strengthen support systems and ensure that personnel feel protected and valued both during service and after.

“We must continue to do more to protect those who protect others,” he said, adding that no officer should feel abandoned under any circumstances.

Recognition of Injured Officers

The police chief also acknowledged officers who sustained injuries in the line of duty, commending their resilience and dedication to national service.

He stated that their sacrifices—both physical and emotional—reflect the enduring strength of the force and deserve national recognition.

Honouring Ultimate Sacrifice

According to the IGP, the payments represent recognition of the courage and commitment of officers who confronted danger to maintain law and order across the country.

“These were not ordinary men,” he said, noting that the fallen officers stood between citizens and insecurity, often at great personal risk.

He concluded that while no compensation can fully account for such losses, the gesture underscores the nation’s gratitude and the police institution’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families.
