British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has been released from hospital and is continuing his recovery at home following a tragic road accident near Lagos, Nigerian authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The two-time heavyweight world champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist was admitted for observation after sustaining minor injuries in a car crash on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident, however, proved fatal for two senior members of Joshua’s team.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed that Joshua was medically cleared and discharged later that day.
In a post shared on X, Omotoso revealed that Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home to pay their final respects to the deceased aides ahead of their planned repatriation.
Trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami lost their lives in the crash. Just hours before the accident, Joshua and Ayodele appeared together in social media footage playing table tennis, a moment that has since taken on emotional significance for fans.
Promoter Eddie Hearn led tributes to the late team members, praising their dedication and loyalty in an Instagram post while offering prayers for Joshua and the bereaved families.
Authorities stated that the vehicle carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck on the busy highway, one of Nigeria’s most heavily trafficked routes connecting Lagos and Ogun State.
The crash has once again drawn attention to Nigeria’s road safety challenges. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, 5,421 people died in 9,570 road accidents in 2024, marking an increase of 340 fatalities compared to the previous year.
Joshua, who has strong Nigerian roots through his parents, last competed in December, securing a high-profile victory over Jake Paul. He maintains a professional record of 29 wins and 4 losses, with 26 knockouts, as he continues to pursue future title opportunities.
