Legal Challenge Against Sole Administrator of Rivers State: A Public Interest Case

Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), has called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to play a key role in promoting peace, reconciliation, and political stability in the state amid ongoing tensions.

Speaking during a meeting with CAN leadership at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Ibas stressed the Church’s vital role in providing moral leadership and guiding the state toward unity, especially during this challenging period.

Describing the Easter season as a time of hope, sacrifice, and reflection, the Administrator said, “The unity of the Church is the seedbed for the unity of the State. Where the Church leads in love, the people will follow in peace.”

Ibas, who was appointed following the declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, disclosed that since assuming office on March 20, 2025, he has embarked on a series of consultations with civil society, traditional rulers, and local officials to restore public trust and cohesion.

He assured CAN that his leadership remains people-centered, transparent, and committed to justice and inclusiveness, noting that sustained peace can only be achieved through dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding.

Responding to the Administrator’s appeal, the Rivers State CAN delegation led by Most Reverend D.E. Kala-Dukubo welcomed the initiative and pledged the Church’s support in peace-building efforts.

However, the body urged the Administrator to ensure that critical areas of governance are not neglected under emergency rule. They cited environmental sanitation and public misinformation as urgent issues affecting the state’s image and daily life.

CAN warned that the spread of false narratives online paints Rivers State as unstable, potentially deterring both tourism and investment.

The Church leaders expressed hope that with divine guidance and open communication between government and faith-based groups, Rivers State can overcome its challenges and emerge more united than ever.
