INEC Dismisses Recall Petition Against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for Failing Constitutional Criteria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially dismissed the petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. In a statement posted on their X page on Thursday, INEC confirmed that the petition did not meet the constitutional requirements outlined in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The petition, filed by a group of constituents under the banner of Concerned Kogi Youth and Women, accused Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan of losing the confidence of her constituents. The group claimed to have collected signatures from over half of the 474,554 registered voters in the district. However, after a thorough review, INEC concluded that the petition did not meet the necessary legal criteria for initiating a recall process.

INEC assured the public that it remains committed to upholding the legal framework surrounding the recall procedure and cautioned against any misinformation or rumors circulating on social media about the matter.

The dismissal of the recall petition comes as a significant development, affirming Akpoti-Uduaghan’s position as the duly elected representative of Kogi Central, despite the challenges she has faced in recent weeks.
