Rivers State Governor Denies Allegations of Inciting Attacks on Oil Pipelines, Defends Administration’s Actions

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has firmly rejected claims made by the federal government through the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi, alleging his involvement in inciting attacks on oil pipelines within the state. In response, Fubara described the allegations as false and baseless, emphasizing his longstanding commitment to peace and stability in the region.

The allegations came amidst rising tensions regarding the security of Nigeria’s oil facilities, with some suggesting that Fubara had failed to act against threats posed by militants. However, in a statement issued by his suspended Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara asserted that these accusations were unfounded and insisted that the federal government was aware of the true criminals behind the attacks and should focus its efforts on them.

Fubara’s response highlighted his reputation as a proponent of peace, noting his consistent calls for unity and non-violence even in challenging times. “It is completely untrue that someone who has always preached peace and non-violence would be involved in plotting attacks on oil pipelines,” said Fubara, underscoring his dedication to safeguarding the state and its people.

Further clarifying the situation, the statement delved into the origins of the unrest, which Fubara claims was exacerbated by controversial remarks made by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. According to Fubara, Wike’s dismissal of the Ijaw ethnic group, calling them “a minority of minorities,” triggered significant unrest in the region, particularly among Ijaw leaders and groups. Fubara emphasized that the Ijaw community had expressed discontent and demanded an apology, but Wike refused to address their concerns.

Fubara also addressed criticisms regarding the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex. He explained that the decision to demolish the building was based on expert recommendations and was in line with earlier critiques from Wike himself, who had previously condemned the poor condition of the facility. The demolished structure is set to be replaced with a modern assembly complex, which is now nearly 80% complete.

Additionally, Fubara pointed out the peaceful nature of the local government elections held in Rivers State in October 2024, noting that despite violent actions taken by FCT Minister Wike’s supporters, his own administration refrained from retaliatory violence. He called on security agencies to focus on identifying and addressing the true perpetrators of violence in the state.

The Rivers State administration under Fubara’s leadership has been marked by a significant commitment to the security and development of oil facilities, with continuous investments in military and security infrastructure. These efforts, he stated, have contributed to increased oil production and revenue generation for the country since he assumed office.

In conclusion, Governor Fubara emphasized that his administration would continue to prioritize peace, security, and the welfare of the people, urging all parties to collaborate in ensuring the safety and prosperity of Rivers State.
