The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the envelope budgetary system to enhance funding accuracy and improve the operational efficiency of the Force.
Dr. Egbetokun made this appeal during the NPF’s 2025 budget presentation to the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday. He was joined by senior officers, the Force Management Team, and key stakeholders, including Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Maidori (Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs), Honourable Makki Yalleman (Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs), and Senator Ibrahim Gaidam (Minister of Police Affairs).
In his address, the IGP outlined several challenges facing the Force and stressed the need for more precise financial planning. He called for the establishment of a Special Operations Account to address national security emergencies effectively, alongside increased allocations for Overhead and Capital Expenditure to ensure the Force’s operational readiness.
Dr. Egbetokun proposed the construction of five new zonal headquarters to improve the NPF’s infrastructure and enhance tactical units essential for internal security. He also highlighted the importance of dedicating budget lines for police training institutions to boost capacity-building efforts across the Force.
The IGP emphasized the urgency of the full and timely release of appropriated funds in 2025, which he believes will significantly impact the Force’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities and contribute to national security.
Reaffirming the NPF’s commitment to a secure and stable Nigeria, Dr. Egbetokun expressed gratitude to the Joint Committees for their continued support, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the NPF and the National Assembly.
