Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the Lagos State Electricity Bill 2024 into law on Tuesday, setting the stage for a transformative energy landscape aimed at providing reliable and affordable electricity to residents.
The Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 addresses critical challenges in the energy sector and lays the foundation for economic growth, industrial expansion, improved quality of life, and environmental sustainability. The signing ceremony at Lagos House, Ikeja, was attended by Deputy Governor Dr. Femi Hamzat, key legislators, and members of the State Executive Council.
During the event, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the law’s transformative potential, stating, “This bill will reshape Lagos’ economic landscape and deliver socio-economic benefits to our citizens.” He urged stakeholders to work collaboratively for seamless implementation, promising a future of accessible and affordable electricity across the state.
The law aims to develop Lagos into a true 21st-century economy by modernizing energy infrastructure, improving security networks, and enhancing nighttime safety with better illumination in underserved areas. Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, announced that implementation will begin within six months, underscoring the government’s commitment to rapid progress.
Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude to the Lagos State House of Assembly, particularly Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and praised the collaborative effort between the legislative and executive arms that made the law possible.
This landmark legislation is expected to position Lagos as a model for sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria, driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for millions.
