The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria on its 64th Independence Day anniversary, emphasizing the importance of social justice and religious freedom in national governance. In a statement released by CAN’s President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in Abuja, the association highlighted key areas for national development, including infrastructure growth, economic empowerment, and youth engagement.

Celebrating Unity and Diversity

Archbishop Okoh urged Nigerians to use this significant occasion as a moment for reflection, encouraging citizens to renew their commitment to unity, peace, and progress.

“This momentous occasion offers us a profound opportunity to reflect on our journey as a nation, acknowledge our achievements, and commit ourselves anew to the ideals of unity, peace, and progress,” he stated. He also emphasized that despite the challenges, Nigeria’s diverse culture remains a source of strength, with the nation’s resilience standing as a testament to its shared commitment to the common good.

A Call for National Unity and Peaceful Coexistence

The CAN President stressed the need for continued national unity and social harmony, urging Nigerians to work together regardless of religious affiliations.

“It is imperative that, regardless of our religious affiliations, we embrace peaceful coexistence and work collaboratively to build a future marked by mutual respect and understanding,” Okoh stated.

Security Progress and Vigilance

Archbishop Okoh also acknowledged the progress made in combating terrorism and banditry across the country, commending the efforts of Nigeria’s security forces. However, he called for continued vigilance to ensure all Nigerians can live without fear.

“In recent years, we have witnessed significant progress in addressing the security challenges posed by terrorism and banditry. These threats have deeply affected many communities, including Christians, and we commend the efforts of our security forces in safeguarding our nation. However, we must remain vigilant and continue to support initiatives that promote safety and security for all Nigerians,” he added.

The Importance of Social Justice and Religious Freedom

CAN highlighted social justice as essential for Nigeria’s growth, calling on the Federal Government to address key challenges like education, employment, and providing equitable opportunities for all citizens. Archbishop Okoh also underscored the importance of religious freedom, noting that it forms a core part of Nigeria’s national identity.

“Religious freedom is a fundamental right that underpins our national ethos. As we celebrate our independence, let us reaffirm our commitment to mutual understanding and mutual respect. This is essential not only for Christians but for all religious groups in Nigeria,” Okoh emphasized.

Prioritizing Infrastructure, Economic Growth, and Youth Empowerment

Archbishop Okoh reiterated the need for Nigeria’s development agenda to focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, and youth empowerment, which are crucial for both Christian communities and the nation as a whole.

“Our national development agenda must continue to focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, and youth empowerment. These initiatives are crucial for the advancement of Christian communities and the nation as a whole,” he stated.

Hope for a Brighter Future

As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence anniversary, CAN called for courage and perseverance, urging Nigerians to remain united and hopeful for a better future. Archbishop Okoh concluded by praying for peace and prosperity for the nation.

“Together, we can overcome the challenges before us and celebrate the richness of our diverse heritage. May God guide us towards lasting peace and prosperity,” he said.
