NGSA Assures Abuja Residents After Recent Earth Tremors

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following the recent earth tremors felt in the region. According to a statement by NGSA Director-General Olusegun Ige, the agency’s monitoring systems have recorded low-magnitude seismic activity, posing minimal risk to the public.

“Our monitoring station in Katampe has detected several minor tremors over the past few days,” Ige stated. “Although the frequency and intensity of the tremors have increased, they remain classified as weak to light, with no cause for alarm.”

Preliminary investigations by the NGSA suggest that the tremors are the result of accumulated stress along faults in the region, causing seismic energy to travel through fractures and manifest as minor ground motions. Most of the tremors were centered northeast of Katampe, around the Mpape area, with a few recorded southwest near Katampe.

“The tremors have been rated between III and IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, indicating weak to light intensity,” Ige added.

The NGSA emphasized that it is continuously monitoring the situation through its seismic stations and urged the public to stay calm and refrain from spreading misinformation.

“We are committed to real-time monitoring and will provide updates if any significant changes occur,” Ige assured. “The safety of residents is our top priority.”
