Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his trust in Kenneth Okonkwo, despite recent criticisms and tensions within the party. Obi cautioned against labelling Okonkwo as a mole, describing him as a trusted ally.
Okonkwo had previously expressed doubts about Obi’s ability to build a winning party, alleging that Obi “does not have what it takes to secure the mandate” even if elected. In response, Obi urged LP members to avoid negative remarks and to engage in constructive dialogue.
“Having differing views does not make someone an enemy. It is crucial to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to personal attacks or negative remarks,” Obi stated. He emphasized Okonkwo’s loyalty and commitment to the Labour Party, highlighting that differing opinions are a natural part of any movement.
“I want to therefore categorically and emphatically declare that Barrister Okonkwo remains my beloved brother and a trusted ally. I sternly caution against referring to him as a mole or making any negative remarks. Barr. Kenneth Okonkwo has stood by me through thick and thin, and his loyalty and commitment cannot be overstated or diminished,” Obi asserted.
Obi further stressed the importance of respect and dialogue, noting, “In fact, to me personally, I don’t want to work with anyone who always agrees with me, because as a leader, learning and listening are critical components of leadership. I want to listen to those who have different opinions and try to convince them otherwise or take their advice if it is better.”
In reaction to Okonkwo’s criticisms, the LP described his attack on Obi as “unfortunate and attention-seeking,” adding that Okonkwo’s resignation from the party did not come as a surprise. Despite the disagreement, Obi’s call for unity and understanding within the party underscores his commitment to maintaining a cohesive and inclusive political movement.
