President Bola Tinubu has lauded the Supreme Court’s recent decision affirming the financial autonomy of local governments, highlighting its importance for enhancing accountability among rural dwellers and their leaders. In a statement released on Thursday, Tinubu emphasized that the verdict underscores the necessity for local council leaders to ensure that their constituents benefit from effective and people-oriented service delivery.

Tinubu urged rural residents to hold their local leaders accountable, now that local government officials have direct control over their finances. This move is seen as a critical step toward ensuring transparency and improved governance at the grassroots level. The President welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, stating that it aligns with the spirit, intent, and purpose of the Nigerian Constitution regarding the statutory rights of local government dwellers.

The President pointed out that ineffective local government administration has been a fundamental obstacle to Nigeria’s advancement. He noted that governance at the local level has been nearly absent, which has hindered the provision of essential services. Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians irrespective of faith, tribe, gender, or political affiliation. He emphasized that this judgment will empower the poor and ensure that local officials are held accountable for their actions.

The Supreme Court’s decision is expected to significantly impact the provision of essential amenities and public goods at the local government level. Tinubu highlighted that the judgment would ensure local officials, elected by the people, will control the resources meant for local development. The President noted the historic significance of the Supreme Court’s decision, stating it upholds the constitutional rights and ideals of local governments regarding financial autonomy. This verdict is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Nigeria’s federal structure and promoting nationwide development.

Tinubu commended the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his diligent and patriotic efforts in securing this important judgment. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the principles of good governance and building an efficient, performance-driven governance system that benefits all Nigerians.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about the people of this country, at all levels. By virtue of this judgment, our people – especially the poor – will be able to hold their local leaders to account for their actions and inactions. What is sent to local government accounts will be known, and services must now be provided without excuses. This judgment stands as a resounding affirmation that we can use legitimate means of redress to restructure our country and restructure our economy to make Nigeria a better place to live in and a fairer society for all of our people,” Tinubu stated.

The Supreme Court’s verdict on local government autonomy marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s governance. It promises to enhance accountability, ensure better service delivery, and foster socio-economic development at the grassroots level.
