Rivers State Governor, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life for the people of Rivers State, emphasizing that nothing would deter his efforts. This statement came on the heels of a Court of Appeal judgment that nullified the expulsion of factional Speaker Martins Amaewhule and 24 other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Governor Fubara made his remarks on Saturday after inspecting the Zonal Hospital in Degema Town, Degema Local Government Area. He highlighted the urgent need for a befitting healthcare facility in the area and assured that his administration was taking necessary steps to address the situation.
“We are here this afternoon, just like what happened yesterday, and if you could remember, I said part of our areas of concern, going forward, will be healthcare services,” Fubara stated. “Yesterday, I did mention that we were on inspection to check the Bori Zonal Hospital covering that particular senatorial district, and will also go and see those in Degema, Ahoada, and Omoku.”
The governor pointed out the lack of a standard healthcare facility in Degema and outlined plans to upgrade the hospital, including building staff quarters, a modern mortuary, and a standard laundry. “Part of the areas that have just been explained to me on my visit this afternoon is the area earmarked for staff quarters – doctors and nurses – areas that will be used to develop a modern mortuary and a laundry because a medical facility must have a standard laundry,” he explained.
Fubara emphasized that his administration was focused on healthcare, education, and agriculture to provide quality services in these key sectors. He assured the people of Degema that they would receive not only critical road infrastructure but also other essential social amenities and services.
“My target for 2025 is going to be healthcare, education, and agriculture. This is just the start. We are here to assure our people that no matter what it is, we still have our eyes on the ball,” Fubara said, urging the residents of Degema to continue supporting the government.
Meanwhile, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, expressed gratitude for the Court of Appeal’s judgment nullifying his expulsion and that of 24 other members. Speaking over the weekend, Amaewhule described the judgment as a reaffirmation of the rule of law and a defense of democracy.
“Let me sincerely on behalf of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly thank the Court of Appeal for standing by our democracy. Nigeria is governed under democratic tenets. What the court did is to reaffirm our faith in this country. We thank the court for the interpretation they had given to some of the matters concerning the Rivers State House of Assembly,” Amaewhule stated.
He also thanked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for supporting President Bola Tinubu and maintaining peace in Rivers State.
