Abuja, Nigeria – The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerian women to take the lead in the country’s food security campaign. She made this appeal on Saturday while unveiling her vegetable garden, an initiative aimed at encouraging first-time women farmers to participate in the ‘Every Home A Garden Competition.’
Mrs. Tinubu planted a variety of vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf, bitterleaf, ewedu, lemongrass, scent leaf, and okra, to demonstrate the impact of individual efforts on food sufficiency. She emphasized that a small personal garden can significantly contribute to household food needs and support broader community food security.
“This little garden will be able to provide healthy vegetables enough for my household, and I would definitely be able to let some of my staff have as well. The solution to any problem lies in everyone contributing their own quota to getting that solution. As a leader, I must show example and plant my own garden,” Mrs. Tinubu stated.
She encouraged women across the country to join the competition by starting their own home gardens. This initiative, she said, would not only ensure they have enough produce for themselves and their neighbors but also promote communal living and support the Federal Government’s food security campaign.
According to Mrs. Tinubu, “This will also enhance communal living and help drive the food security campaign of the Federal Government. The vegetables are medicinal, and the garden is to lead by example for other women to embrace smart gardening.”
The First Lady showcased her garden to Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, Wife of the Imo State Governor, and Mrs. Aisha Matawalle, Wife of the Minister of State for Defence, highlighting the importance of leading by example.
The ‘Every Home A Garden Competition’ is open to first-time women farmers across Nigeria, encouraging them to contribute to food security and promote healthy living through home gardening.
