The Senate has initiated legislative action to revive and complete the $18.5 billion Abuja Centenary City project. This follows the adoption of a motion titled “Urgent Need to revive and complete the stalled Centenary Abuja Project.” In response, the Senate plans to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the factors hindering the project’s completion and to review the original public-private partnership agreement.
Senator Yisa Oyelola Ashiru, representing Kwara South, highlighted the significance of the project, which was envisioned to create jobs and serve as an economic hub. He noted the lack of progress in the project over the past decade and emphasized the need for regulatory support from the federal government to prioritize its revival.
Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, criticized the Nigeria Correctional Service for lapses in its operations, particularly in addressing jailbreaks since its transition from the Nigeria Prisons Service. Akpabio stressed the importance of the correctional system in rehabilitation and ethical reorientation of offenders.
In response to the motion, the Senate referred the bill to amend the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) Act to the Senate committee on Finance and Appropriation for further review and consideration.
