Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party, has criticized the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project initiated by the federal government. He argues that the timing of the project is wrong and that it is not a priority compared to the deplorable state of internal road projects across the country.

Despite the substantial budget allocated to road infrastructure in the Federal Ministry of Works 2024 capital budget and additional funding from multilateral loan projects, Obi expressed doubts about the adequacy of resources to address all critical roads. He questioned the wisdom of embarking on new projects like the coastal superhighway when existing projects remain incomplete.
Obi urged prioritization of existing uncompleted projects over new ventures, emphasizing the need for fiscal discipline and allocation of resources to repair and complete existing infrastructure.
