President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the importance of overhauling the institutional mentality of police officers as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). He made these remarks during the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony in Abuja, where he declared April 7th as ‘Police National Day’.
Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, outlined comprehensive reforms aimed at revitalizing the police force, including investments in training, capacity-building, and upgrading equipment and technology. He stressed the need to equip officers with the expertise required for modern policing, acknowledging the challenges they face in combating crime.
The president’s speech, titled “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” lauded the dedication and resilience of police officers amid growing security threats in the nation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming the NPF into a modern, professional, and accountable institution aligned with national values.
Furthermore, Tinubu announced the adoption of the first week of April as Police Week, with April 7th designated as National Police Day. He underscored the significance of honoring the sacrifices and contributions of police officers, emphasizing their role as guardians of the nation.
In his goodwill message, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the police leadership for recognizing the hard work and patriotism of officers. He called for the celebration of exemplary officers while advocating for the removal of those who undermine the integrity of the force.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun applauded Tinubu’s support and reiterated the commitment of the police force to uphold peace and security. He expressed gratitude to the award recipients for their dedication and selflessness in serving the nation.
Chairman of the Police Service Commission Solomon Arase advocated for improved welfare for police personnel, emphasizing its impact on performance and morale. He praised the support of the Tinubu administration and pledged the commission’s cooperation in transforming the force.
The event also featured goodwill messages from other dignitaries, including Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, and former IGP Chief Sunday Ehindero.
