Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, has disclosed that the Bola Tinubu administration may have expended over N8 trillion on subsidizing the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), despite announcing the withdrawal of fuel subsidy. El-Rufai made this revelation during a workshop in Maiduguri, emphasizing the need for policy flexibility and effective leadership in addressing economic challenges.

El-Rufai pointed out that while the subsidy withdrawal was initially announced by President Bola Tinubu, the government has since reinstated the subsidy due to the substantial financial burden incurred, surpassing previous subsidy expenditures. He highlighted the discrepancy between the prices of petrol and diesel, indicating that petrol prices should logically exceed diesel prices. However, diesel is now sold above N1,000 per litre, while petrol ranges between N600 to N750 per litre, underscoring ongoing fuel subsidy.

While advocating for policy continuity and leadership accountability, El-Rufai emphasized the importance of assessing government performance over time and making necessary adjustments to policies when required. He commended the present administration for recognizing the need to reinstate fuel subsidy in response to its impact on the economy.

In his welcome address, the Borno State Head of Service, Barrister Mallam Fannami, lauded El-Rufai’s participation in the workshop, highlighting the opportunity for participants to benefit from his extensive experience in public service. He also praised Governor Zulum for his commitment to revitalizing the state civil service for improved service delivery.

Governor Zulum, represented by his Deputy, Umar Usman Kadafur, expressed appreciation for El-Rufai’s contributions, acknowledging his exemplary track record in public service. He emphasized the workshop’s significance in enhancing the skills of civil servants and improving government operations for the benefit of the people.

El-Rufai’s remarks underscore the complex dynamics of fuel subsidy management and the importance of responsive governance in addressing economic challenges and ensuring effective policy implementation.
