Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has initiated two judicial commissions of inquiry tasked with investigating cases of misappropriation of public properties, political violence, and missing persons occurring between 2015 and 2023. In his inauguration speech, Governor Yusuf emphasized his commitment to holding accountable anyone found culpable during the preceding administration led by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He underscored the detrimental impact of political violence on democracy and pledged to address instances of violence, particularly those recorded in 2023, to prevent future occurrences.

The first commission, chaired by Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, will focus on cases of political violence and missing persons, aiming to uncover the criminal networks involved and bring sponsors to justice. Governor Yusuf urged the commission to investigate the root causes of violence associated with the 2015, 2019, and 2023 election periods. Simultaneously, the second commission, led by Justice Faruk Lawan, received a mandate to probe instances of misappropriation of public properties and assets, both within and outside the state, particularly during the previous administration.

Governor Yusuf clarified that these initiatives are driven by the people’s mandate and not motivated by political considerations or targeting specific individuals. He charged both commissions with upholding their oath and ensuring justice for the state. Expressing confidence in the appointed members’ integrity, the Governor emphasized the importance of delivering comprehensive reports within three months.
