The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has raised suspicions regarding the reasons for his continued detention, suggesting it may be linked to the substantial amount of money the federal government reportedly spends each time Kanu appears in court.
According to Emmanuel Kanu, the family’s spokesperson, there are claims that the Nigerian government spends approximately N800 million for each of Kanu’s court appearances. This significant expenditure allegedly covers logistical expenses, including providing adequate security for Kanu’s transportation from the Department of State Services (DSS) facility to the court and back.
Emmanuel Kanu expressed concern that Kanu’s detention has become a lucrative venture for a select group within the government, implying that his release might face obstacles due to the financial interests involved.
The family spokesperson urged the government to disclose who receives and allocates the funds and for what purposes. He suggested that the vested interests benefiting from Kanu’s incarceration might resist efforts to secure his release, fearing the loss of their financial gains.
In addition to the financial concerns, the family highlighted fresh worries about Nnamdi Kanu’s health, stating that he requires urgent medical attention to prevent a potential health crisis. They expressed alarm over reports of his deteriorating health condition and emphasized the need for him to have access to his personal doctors, particularly a cardiologist.
The family called on the authorities to ensure that Kanu receives the necessary medical care and warned against allowing him to deteriorate further while in DSS custody.
