Catholic Archbishop Advocates for Integrity and Service in Leadership

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Ignatius Kaigama, delivered a powerful Palm Sunday Homily emphasizing the importance of integrity and service in leadership, particularly in the context of Nigerian politics. Kaigama stressed that politicians who make promises during their campaigns must fulfill them, urging them not to betray the trust of the people they serve.

During his sermon at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral in Abuja, Archbishop Kaigama called on Nigerians to draw closer to God and live lives free of double standards. He highlighted the need for leaders, whether spiritual, traditional, or political, to practice kenosis, which involves self-emptying and self-giving, mirroring the humility of Christ.

Kaigama emphasized the sacrificial nature of leadership, urging leaders to serve their people rather than exploit their positions for personal gain. He invoked the image of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, illustrating the humility and service expected of leaders.

Furthermore, Archbishop Kaigama challenged religious leaders to prioritize the spiritual welfare of their congregations over material wealth and extravagant displays. He emphasized that true shepherds should focus on leading their people to eternal salvation rather than worldly riches or the numerical growth of their congregations.

As the Holy Week commenced, Archbishop Kaigama encouraged all to reflect on the selfless sacrifice of Jesus and to strive for integrity and service in their lives, even amidst challenges and difficulties. He urged the faithful to remain steadfast in their faith and to sing “Hosanna to Jesus,” trusting in his salvation from despair and sin.

In summary, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama’s Palm Sunday Homily serves as a poignant reminder for leaders to uphold integrity, humility, and service in their roles, echoing the teachings of Jesus Christ and emphasizing the primacy of spiritual welfare over material concerns.
