Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a two-time governorship candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, has announced his withdrawal from the forthcoming governorship election in the state. Jegede previously contested in the 2016 and 2020 elections but lost to Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress.

Addressing his supporters in Akure, the state capital, Jegede explained his decision, stating that after extensive consultations, it became clear that there was a need to reconsider the approach to the election. He emphasized the importance of equitable representation, equity, and fair play in the governorship race.

Jegede highlighted that the PDP’s constitution does not support zoning, and past elections have been based on merit rather than geographical considerations. He expressed his belief that it was time to give other competent and loyal party members the opportunity to contest in the primary election.

Acknowledging the need to rebuild the party for victory, Jegede pledged to support all aspirants in their quest for the governorship position. He urged party members to work together to ensure a successful primary and a strong showing in the upcoming elections.

Currently, four aspirants, including Adeolu Akinwumi, Olusola Ebiseni, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, and Victor Kolade Akinjo, have purchased the PDP’s Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the governorship race.
