The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a pan-northern socio-political organization, has criticized the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi over allegations of budget padding by the Senate. The ACF expressed regret over the rushed process that led to Ningi’s suspension and called for an independent investigation into the matter rather than immediate punitive action.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur-Baba, the ACF emphasized the importance of focusing on the substance of the allegations rather than the messenger. The forum expressed concern that the suspension of Senator Ningi, who had previously served as the leader of the Northern Senators Forum, could jeopardize the interests of many communities in the northern region.
The ACF advocated for a thorough investigation by a statutory or ad hoc committee of the Senate to ensure fairness and transparency in handling the allegations. The organization regretted the absence of representation for Bauchi Central in the 10th Senate during Ningi’s suspension and pledged support for the senator and his supporters in seeking a satisfactory resolution through constitutional means.
Additionally, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Samuel Okutekpa, criticized the suspension, describing it as democratic but indicative of despotism and tyranny. Okutekpa highlighted constitutional concerns regarding the Senate’s power to suspend Ningi and emphasized the need for adherence to due process and the principles of constitutional democracy.
Overall, the ACF’s condemnation and Okutekpa’s critique reflect broader concerns about the integrity of democratic processes and the importance of upholding constitutional principles in governance.
