HURIWA Criticizes Senate Suspension of Senator Ningi as Cover-Up
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly criticized the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi by the Godswill Akpabio-led Senate over his allegations of budget padding in the 2024 budget.

In a statement released by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA condemned the swift suspension, labeling it as a cover-up. The organization expressed concern that the suspension could be perceived as a negative indication of the Senate’s commitment to transparency and democracy, transforming it into what seems like a secretive entity. HURIWA pointed out that the Senate’s failure to initiate a publicly advertised investigation into Ningi’s allegations was a missed opportunity to uphold civil democracy.

Furthermore, HURIWA rebuked the senators for their conduct during the session leading to Ningi’s suspension, likening it to the behavior of political thugs and emphasizing the lack of decorum.

The statement emphasized the importance of transparency and due process, asserting that the Senate should have established a committee to investigate the allegations, allowing the Nigerian public to follow the proceedings closely. By resorting to legislative tactics to silence Ningi, HURIWA argued, the Senate has undermined constitutional principles and democratic norms.

HURIWA concluded by denouncing the Senate’s actions as unconstitutional and undemocratic, urging for a more transparent and accountable approach to addressing such serious allegations.
