Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central clarifies his remarks on the 2024 budget, stating that the National Assembly has the right to tinker with it. He denies accusations of misrepresentation and emphasizes the importance of transparency in budget processes.

Senator Abdul Ningi, representing the PDP in Bauchi Central, has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent remarks on the 2024 budget. In an interview with ARISE NEWS, he clarified his stance, asserting that the National Assembly has the constitutional right to tinker with the budget.

Ningi refuted claims of using the term “pad” to describe budget adjustments, stating, “There is no way the National Assembly will pad budget. The National Assembly is the owner of the appropriation.” He emphasized that until the budget is passed by the National Assembly, it remains a proposal subject to adjustments.

Regarding his interview with the BBC, Ningi stressed that he was misrepresented and never accused the presidency of running two budgets. He clarified, “There was no time I said the Presidency or the President was implementing 2 budgets.” He further highlighted his extensive experience in parliamentary affairs, aiming to dispel any misconceptions about his remarks.

Responding to claims made by the president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, about an addition of 1.27 trillion to the budget, Ningi stated that he was not aware of such an addition. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, asserting his right as a senator to know the details of budget adjustments.

Ningi concluded by reaffirming his commitment to serving the interests of Nigerians and ensuring transparency in budget processes. He called for clarity on budget figures and details, underscoring the importance of public awareness and scrutiny.
