The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised concerns about reported misconduct in the Ajaokuta Steel Company and called for a thorough investigation into alleged mismanagement. They commend President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in the development of the company but emphasize the need for accountability and transparency.
NANS expressed concerns about potential misconduct in the Ajaokuta Steel Company and urged President Tinubu to order a comprehensive investigation into the reported mismanagement. They emphasized that individuals shielding corrupt managers should also be probed, as they may be benefiting from ill-gotten gains or have personal interests conflicting with anti-corruption efforts.
The student body urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices & Other related Offences Commission (ICPC) to resist any form of intimidation or shielding while investigating mismanagement in the company. They stressed the importance of simultaneous revamping efforts and probing to ensure a holistic approach to addressing issues within the company.
In a press release, NANS emphasized the necessity of holding accountable those involved in mismanagement, stating that bringing offenders to book would serve as a deterrent to others and contribute to the company’s growth by recovering embezzled funds.
The association criticized the appointment of a Sole Administrator for the past 12 years, citing concerns about unchecked power leading to potential corruption. They advocated for a decentralized power structure within the company to enhance effectiveness, accountability, and productivity.
NANS underscored the importance of addressing concerns raised by Nigerians regarding the ownership and control of the company, emphasizing that no single tribe should claim sole ownership due to its federal government funding. They highlighted the potential of the company to provide massive employment opportunities and technological advancements for all Nigerian students.
Commending President Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio for their efforts in developing the Ajaokuta Steel Company, NANS appreciated their dedication to the project. They also acknowledged the contributions of members of the National Assembly, particularly Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, in supporting the growth and development of the company.
The association highlighted ongoing efforts by the government and stakeholders to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Company and the National Iron Ore Mining Company, expressing optimism for their success despite global economic challenges.
However, NANS expressed concern that individuals responsible for the company’s current state remain uninvestigated and unpunished, posing a threat to President Tinubu’s revitalization efforts. They called for accountability and justice to ensure the success of the company’s revival plans.
The call by NANS for a thorough investigation into alleged mismanagement in the Ajaokuta Steel Company underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in national institutions. Their commendation of President Tinubu’s efforts reflects recognition of proactive measures in the company’s development. As stakeholders continue their efforts to revive the company, addressing concerns and holding perpetrators accountable will be crucial for its success.
