The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammed Ali Pate, announced on Wednesday in Abuja that the federal government will inject N50 billion into primary healthcare as the initial installment of the basic health care fund.
Addressing journalists at the fourth edition of the Ministerial Press Briefing, Prof Pate highlighted the government’s commitment to revitalizing primary healthcare facilities across the nation, ensuring they are adequately equipped and staffed to provide essential services to communities.
The infusion of funds, which marks a significant increase from the previous allocation of N25 billion in 2022, aims to breathe new life into the country’s primary healthcare system, making quality care accessible to all citizens.
Prof Pate emphasized the crucial role of primary healthcare in promoting citizens’ well-being, noting substantial improvements in health outcomes and reductions in preventable diseases through sustained investment and strategic partnerships.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to bolster maternal and child health, with a notable increase in the number of women attending their first antenatal care and skilled birth attendants now available at 1,400 additional health facilities.
In addition to recruiting 2,497 healthcare professionals to bridge workforce gaps, the government has expanded health insurance coverage, enrolling approximately 750,000 more Nigerians since the administration’s inception.
On vaccination efforts, Prof Pate revealed the successful vaccination of over 4.95 million eligible girls aged 9-14 years with the HPV vaccine since its launch in October 2023. Phase 2 introduction is scheduled for May 2024 across several states.
Addressing concerns over rising pharmaceutical costs, Prof Pate announced plans for an executive order to curb escalating drug prices in the short term. The government also aims to domesticate imported drugs within the next three years, collaborating with the Ministry of Trade to achieve this goal.
The government’s initiatives underscore its dedication to improving healthcare accessibility, affordability, and quality for all Nigerians, reflecting a comprehensive approach to addressing healthcare challenges and promoting well-being nationwide.
