How Two Candidates Emerged in the Edo State APC Governorship Primaries

The situation at the Edo State APC governorship primaries on Saturday, with two candidates emerging as winners, has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the integrity of the election process.

The conflicting announcements of winners by two different bodies, the Chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, and the Returning Officer for the election, Dr. Stanley Ugboaje, have cast doubt on the credibility of the primary election.

According to the Uzodimma-led committee, Mr. Dennis Idahosa was declared the winner, while Sen. Monday Okpebholo was declared the winner by Dr. Stanley Ugboaje at a separate venue. The disparities in the announced results raise questions about transparency and the adherence to established procedures during the election process.

Furthermore, the reports of violence and disruption by suspected political thugs at the venue of the second primary are deeply concerning. The attack on journalists covering the exercise and the destruction of their equipment demonstrate a blatant disregard for press freedom and democratic principles.

The failure of the security personnel present at the venue to prevent the disruption highlights the need for a thorough investigation into the incident and for measures to be taken to ensure the safety of journalists and all participants in future electoral processes.

Overall, the conflicting announcements of winners, coupled with the violence and disruption during the primaries, underscore the challenges facing the electoral process in Nigeria and the importance of upholding democratic principles, transparency, and the rule of law.
