The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has expressed grave concern over the dire state of youth unemployment in Nigeria, warning that the nation may be facing imminent danger. Speaking at the Sixth Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) in Kaduna, he highlighted the pressing economic hardship faced by Nigerians, particularly in the northern region, characterized by frustration, hunger, and resentment.
Attributing insecurity and poverty as the major issues plaguing the northern populace, the Sultan emphasized the urgent need to address the staggering unemployment rate among youths. He stressed the potential danger posed by millions of idle youths lacking employment opportunities and basic necessities.
The Sultan urged traditional rulers to take proactive measures in finding solutions to the prevailing challenges, emphasizing the importance of implementing proposed solutions rather than merely discussing them. He underscored the critical role of education, health, and addressing insecurity and poverty as vital components in resolving the myriad problems facing the north.
Additionally, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, represented by his deputy Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, echoed the call for collaboration among northern states to tackle security threats and other developmental issues. He advocated for the establishment of a command and control center to coordinate joint efforts against criminal elements such as terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers.
Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), emphasized the role of traditional rulers in identifying and mitigating security threats, particularly by addressing insider threats facilitated by informants within communities. He urged collaboration among stakeholders and highlighted the challenge posed by saboteurs hindering security efforts.
