With less than two weeks remaining in 2023, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has affirmed its commitment to meeting the revenue target of N3.6 trillion for the year. The assurance was given by the Comptroller General, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, during the flag-off and handover of houses to beneficiaries of the Coop Pacesetter Estate, constructed for Customs Officers in the Oyo/Osun Area Command.
Adeniyi highlighted that the NCS has experienced a significant surge in its average monthly collection in the latter half of the year. The determination to achieve the revenue target is underpinned by the desire to minimize deviations, particularly in light of substantial shortfalls observed in the first half of the year. The Customs Service aims to align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to fulfill its mandate.
Prioritizing the morale of Customs Officers, Adeniyi emphasized the implementation of various welfare programs and initiatives, including the housing project, recognition, and awards to celebrate outstanding performance, dedication, and achievements. These initiatives are designed to enhance loyalty, motivation, and sustained productivity among the workforce.
Adeniyi announced the provision of 5,000 housing units for officers nationwide, addressing accommodation challenges faced by Customs personnel. In response to the impact of the fuel subsidy removal, he disclosed the approval of a N35,000 award for all NCS officers, effective since September this year.
During the handover of the houses, Adeniyi expressed pleasure, stating, “It is a great pleasure for me to hand over the keys of these houses to the members of the Cooperative. It is to ensure the overall welfare of the Officers.” The focus on mental, physical, and overall welfare aligns with efforts to optimize officer performance.
The NCS plans to construct 5,000 housing units in various locations, including Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Ibadan, Giri, Masala, and Port-Harcourt. This initiative aims to provide stability for officers, enabling them to invest in their families and futures while contributing more effectively to the nation.
