The National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has disclosed that approximately 3,000 barrels of crude oil were lost in the recent oil spill on November 15 from TotalEnergies’ offshore Egina Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.

NOSDRA emphasized that the spill was not minor, but the response strategy implemented helped minimize its impact. The Director-General of NOSDRA, Idris Musa, stated that the clean-up is still underway, contradicting TotalEnergies’ earlier claims of minimal impact.

TotalEnergies had asserted that the spill was not massive, and appropriate response measures reduced its impact, with no impact on production or communities. The FPSO, situated 130 kilometers off the Atlantic coastline from Port Harcourt, has a daily production capacity of 200,000 barrels and storage for 2.3 million barrels.

NOSDRA deployed personnel, activated the National Oil Spills Contingency Plan, and collaborated with other oil companies for an efficient response, preventing the crude from reaching the coastline. TotalEnergies has not provided new information in response to NOSDRA’s latest revelation.
