Why Senate President Akpabio Shunned Tambuwal, Others in Selecting Individuals for Key Roles in the Senate

Senator Simon Mwadkwon has emerged as the minority leader of the upper legislative chamber, defeating Aminu Tambuwal, who was vying for the same position.

The announcement of the minority leadership was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who revealed the selected individuals for key roles. Senator Mwadkwon was appointed as the minority leader, with Oyewumi Olalere as the deputy minority leader, Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the minority whip, and Senator Rufai Anga as the deputy minority whip.

Aminu Tambuwal, the former governor of Sokoto and a former speaker of the House of Representatives, had expressed his interest in leading the minority caucus. However, his name was conspicuously absent from the list of appointed leaders. This was attributed to opposition from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who remain dissatisfied with Tambuwal’s involvement in the presidential primary election that resulted in Atiku Abubakar becoming the party’s presidential candidate.
