NARD Suspends Strike Warning

Members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) terminated their five-day strike warning.

Wednesday of last week, the association went on strike after the federal government failed to satisfy its demands.

The NARD president stated, “Progress made will be reviewed at the association’s general meeting on June 2, 2023, where the next course of action will be decided.”

The association gave the government a two-week ultimatum on April 29, failing which it would go on strike.

Among the association’s demands is an immediate 200% increase in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) compared to the current gross salary of physicians.

It also demanded the immediate withdrawal and abandonment of the ill-conceived bill proposed by the Honourable Ganiyu Johnson regarding the “enslavement of young doctors in Nigeria.”

The NARD also demanded immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) in accordance with the agreements reached at the Federal Ministry of Health-convened meeting of stakeholders.

In addition to demanding immediate enormous recruitment of clinical staff in hospitals, the association demanded immediate development of infrastructure in all hospitals without further delay.

In addition, it demanded the immediate implementation of CONMESS, the domestication of MRTA, and the revision of risk allowance by all state governments and private tertiary health institutions where any form of residency training is conducted, among others.
