Former Zamfara state governor Abdulaziz Yari claims he is still running for senate president.
On Monday, the senator-elect addressed reporters on the outskirts of the inauguration ceremony for new and returning members of Congress.
Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau were nominated by the ruling party for the positions of senate president and vice president, respectively.
Senator-elects have the ability, according to Yari, to aspire to preside over the upper legislative chamber.
The senator-elect stated, “I am a loyal party member, and nobody has told me that any position in the tenth national assembly has been zoned.”
“Among the 109 senators, the position of president of the senate is first among equals. Any senator-elect who wishes to assume office is required to seek the support of others, as I am doing.
“It is a system of hiring and firing. On the day of the inauguration, they should appoint me as president of the tenth senate. I will not disillusion the majority of those who have given their support after being approached by me.
“My becoming senate president on the day of the inauguration depends solely on a decision made by 108 other senators on that day.”
The former governor was one of the senators-elect who presented a “protest letter” to the APC leadership regarding the allocation formula for the 10th assembly’s leadership positions.
