Usman Alkali Baba, the inspector-general of police (IGP), has stated that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will defend the nation’s democracy at any cost.

Baba stated at a Monday news conference in Abuja that the May 29 inauguration at the federal and state levels is irrevocable.

The IGP stated that those intending to disrupt the inauguration ceremonies will be “identified, swiftly isolated, and prosecuted.”

The police and other law enforcement agencies will not allow political actors to create tension prior to the ceremony, according to Baba.

He added that security agencies were prepared to maintain the stability of the nation’s internal security throughout the inauguration and beyond.

“The inauguration ceremonies at all levels of national and state government are essential constitutional requirements for the sustenance of our nation’s political order,” the IGP stated.

“The Nigerian police are obligated by law to protect the nation’s democratic heritage and to strictly enforce the constitution.

“Therefore, I assure the citizenry that our allegiance to our democratic and political order remains unwavering and steadfast. Our democracy will be defended at all expenses.

“We will perform this duty effectively and openly. Whoever stands in the way will be identified, swiftly isolated, and prosecuted.”
