Hope Uzodimma, the governor of Imo, won the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for governorship in the state.
Uzodimma was the only candidate in the primary held on Friday in Owerri, the state capital of Imo.
Williams Kayoda, chairman of the committee for the primary election, reported that the governor received 63,618 votes to win the contest.
According to him, 64,667 delegates from 305 districts in 27 local government areas of the state were accredited for the election.
“During our brief stay, we appointed election-related ward and local government area committees,” he said.
“My mandate was to adhere to democratic principles and ensure that they are constitutional, legitimate, supported morally, and legally binding.”
In accordance with this mandate, the primary election was conducted via direct primary in all 27 local government areas.
Kayoda described the activity as tranquil, conflict-free, and error-free.
In his acceptance speech, Uzodimma hailed the delegates and party members for their vote of confidence.
“The victory of today’s event is a victory dedicated to God Almighty and one that I will cherish for a very long time,” he declared.
“I view it as a vote of confidence from the members of our great party and the Imo people in general.
“In retrospect, you will concur that there is a substantial difference between where we were when we met Imo state in 2020 and where we are now in 2023.
“If that is what moved you to challenge me to continue, I assure you that I will do everything in my power not to betray the trust you have placed in me.
“I pray that God will grant me the courage, wisdom, knowledge, and resources to bring Imo to its destination.
“As you return home, pray for me. The current Imo would have been three times better if we had not spent so much money combating insecurity, but God has intervened.
“Going forward, we will double our speed.”
The election for governor of Imo state will take place on November 11.
