The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that thugs have attacked its headquarters at Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State.

Obingwa is the home LGA of the departing governor of Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu, who is attempting to install PDP’s Okechukwu Ahiwe as the new governor.

The thugs reported to be members of the PDP, invaded the Obingwa LGA headquarters as the collation of results was still continuing.

A party agent who was at the LGA stated Governor Ikpeazu was observed at the INEC collation facility earlier in the day, soon before the invasion.

Opposition party members, particularly from the Labour Party (LP), which is rumoured to have swept the majority of wards, are anxious and have urged INEC to safeguard the integrity of the LGA results.

INEC tweeted on its Twitter account Sunday afternoon, “Our Obingwa Local Government Area office in Abia State has been attacked by thugs.
The authorities have been notified. The Commission is currently monitoring the situation and will release a statement in the near future.”
