On Wednesday, the United States of America extended its congratulations to Nigeria and Bola Tinubu on his victory in the presidential election that was held on Saturday. The United States also issued a call for calm in the midst of allegations of voter fraud and concerns over technical issues.

Ned Price, a spokesperson for the State Department, issued the following statement: “The United States of America congratulates the people of Nigeria, president-elect Tinubu, and all of the political leaders.” “This contested election ushers in a new era for Nigerian politics and democracy,” he went on to say. “The stakes have never been higher.”

Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress, received 8.8 million votes, while the two main opposition candidates, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, received 6.9 million and 6.1 million votes, respectively, according to the results published by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Price noted the skepticism that exists among some Nigerians regarding the veracity of the results, particularly in light of the fact that at least one opposition figure has stated their intention to challenge the outcome. “We understand that many Nigerians, as well as some of the parties, have voiced unhappiness with the manner in which the process was done,” he stated. “We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.”

“Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process,” Price said, urging political leaders to register their concerns through established legal “mechanisms.” “Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process,” Price said.

The election officials in Nigeria had thought that with the introduction of new biometric voter identification technology, the election would be the cleanest one to date; nevertheless, technical difficulties, lengthy delays, and delayed results have fed charges of fraud.

Price made the following statement: “We ask on all parties to refrain from violence or inflammatory speech at this vital time.”
