On Wednesday, a Kano Magistrate Court ordered that the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, be held at the Goron-Dutse correctional centre awaiting the resolution of his bail plea. The order was made effective immediately.

The defense attorney for the prosecution filed a motion with the court requesting that the suspect be remanded to a detention center awaiting the conclusion of investigations into the case conducted by the Attorney General of the state.

Lawyer Abdul Adamu, who represents the accused, claimed that his client ought to be released on bail on the basis of his self-recognition as a member of the House of Representatives and as a member-elect of the 10th National Assembly.

After hearing arguments on the bail application from both the prosecution and the defense, the presiding magistrate decided to postpone the case until March 7.

On the other hand, at the arraignment that took place on Wednesday evening, the Senior Magistrate, Ibrahim Mansur Yola, made his verdict after hearing to both his Counsel and the Counsel for the prosecutor.

He issued an order that the person in charge of the majority shall remain detained in the correctional facility until the 7th of March, 2023, for a hearing on the bail application.

In addition, eight other people were left with grievous injuries as a result of the attack.

He stated that in response to an alleged viral video of some of the victims with suspected gunshot wounds that was posted on social media, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the 2023 General Election for the Kano State Command, CP Muhammad Yakubu, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Kano State Police Command to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“As a direct result of his unwillingness to accept the invitation, the Command was forced into a position where they had no choice but to initiate a procedure that would result in his detention.

After that, investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Bompai Kano detained him at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in Kano.

“The investigation is still going on, those who have been detained will shortly be brought before a judge for prosecution, and efforts to track down those who are still at large are being stepped up.

“Although the Commissioner of Police expresses his gratitude to the good people of Kano State for their peaceful conduct in upholding law and order throughout the recently concluded Presidential and National Assembly Elections and its aftermath,”

He stated that the Command is restating its dedication to protecting the lives and properties of the “Kanawan Dabo.”
