According to a trending report, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has not issued an order to banks in the country to collect old N500 and N1,000 notes from Nigerians.

In a statement published by the bank on Friday, the Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, said: “The Central Bank of Nigeria has been made aware of some fraudulent and unapproved messages claiming that the CBN has authorized Deposit Money banks to accept old N500 and N1,000 banknotes.”

“For the avoidance of confusion, and in accordance with Mr. President’s announcement of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been instructed to ONLY reprint and circulation the old N200 banknotes, which are expected to circulate as legal money until April 10, 2023.

“Therefore, the public should dismiss any communication and/or information that has not been properly issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this topic.”

Before publishing any material, the bank urged media professionals to confirm it with reliable sources.
