The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained the operations manager of a large commercial bank in the central region of Abuja for refusing to load the bank’s ATMs despite having N29 million of the redesigned naira notes in the vaults.
Before he was hauled away on Monday for further questioning, the operatives ordered the loading of all ATMs and the payment of the required amount over the counter, much to the relief of the clients who had waited for hours without receiving the new bills.
Monday, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, released this information in a statement.
Uwujaren stated that the EFCC made the discovery as part of its continuing monitoring and visits to banks around the nation to inspect their vaults and determine if they were intentionally refusing to distribute the new naira notes.
He stated, “More than five bank branches were covered by EFCC agents in Abuja on Monday, and similar operations are happening in zonal commands across the nation.”
“The operation will continue until the banking system returns to normalcy.
“Nigerians having difficulty accessing their funds at any bank should call the commission immediately if they suspect foul activity.”
