Labour Party Notifies INEC of 2026 Congresses and National Convention Timetable

Nigeria’s Labour Party has formally submitted its schedule for key internal elections and its national convention to the electoral commission. The move, the party says, aligns with legal requirements governing political party activities and aims to ensure broader member participation ahead of the 2026 exercises.

Compliance with Electoral Laws

In a letter addressed to the Director of Election and Party Monitoring at the Independent National Electoral Commission headquarters in Abuja, the Labour Party confirmed that it had approved timelines for its ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its National Convention.

The party stated that the notification complies with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), alongside INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. It also referenced Sections 223(1) and (2) of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999, which require political parties to formally inform INEC of their congresses, conventions, and meetings.

Revised Timetable After Postponement

According to the correspondence, the newly approved timetable follows an earlier postponement of the party’s internal electoral processes. The Labour Party said the delay was necessary to allow wider participation among its members nationwide.

The party noted that the adjustment would also enable the completion of its ongoing digital membership registration exercise, which is expected to play a key role in determining eligibility and participation in the congresses.

Focus on Inclusive Participation

“The party, in an earlier correspondence duly acknowledged, notified the Commission of the postponement of its previously scheduled activities to enable broader participation of members,” the letter stated.

The development signals the party’s efforts to strengthen internal democratic processes while adhering to regulatory requirements set by INEC.
