Why FG is Re-opening Slained Journalist Dele Giwa’s Murder Case
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja marks a significant development in the quest for justice for slain journalist Dele Giwa and other media practitioners who lost their lives while performing their duties. The court’s order to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice to reopen investigations and prosecute the murder of Dele Giwa is a step towards ensuring accountability for these heinous crimes.

The court’s decision also underscores the importance of upholding the fundamental rights of media practitioners to safety, as guaranteed by the constitution and international human rights charters. By ordering the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of attacks against journalists, the court sends a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated and that those responsible will be held accountable.

Furthermore, the court’s directive for the Federal Government of Nigeria to take measures to prevent attacks on journalists and raise awareness about the laws and standards for ensuring their safety is crucial for safeguarding press freedom and protecting the lives of media practitioners.

Dele Giwa’s tragic death, along with other journalists mentioned in the suit, remains a painful reminder of the dangers faced by those who work to uncover the truth and hold power to account. As the nation commemorates nearly 40 years since Giwa’s passing, this ruling brings renewed hope for justice and serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of his work and the importance of press freedom in Nigeria.
