Abuja, Nigeria \u2014 August 29, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Peter Obi<\/strong>, the 2023 Labour Party (LP)<\/strong> presidential candidate, has strongly condemned the recent hike in international passport fees<\/strong> by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)<\/strong>, accusing the federal government of worsening the plight of ordinary Nigerians.<\/p>\n

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter)<\/strong> account, Obi described the new passport charges as “outrageous”<\/strong> and disconnected from Nigeria\u2019s economic realities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary,\u201d Obi wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Passport Now Costs More Than Minimum Wage, Says Peter Obi<\/h3>\n

According to the new fee structure announced by NIS, a 32-page passport booklet<\/strong> will now cost \u20a6100,000<\/strong>, while a 64-page passport with 10-year validity<\/strong> will cost \u20a6200,000<\/strong> \u2014 an increase that has drawn backlash across the country.<\/p>\n

Obi, a former Anambra State governor<\/strong>, noted the irony of a passport costing more than Nigeria\u2019s newly proposed \u20a670,000 minimum wage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cost of a single passport now exceeds a worker\u2019s monthly salary, probably the only country in the world to achieve this feat,\u201d he stated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Obi: FG Is Shifting Burden to Struggling Citizens<\/h3>\n

Obi\u2019s remarks point to a growing trend of criticism directed at the federal government for what many see as anti-poor economic policies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than easing hardship, the government is shifting more weight onto struggling citizens,\u201d Obi added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is the third hike in passport fees<\/strong> in just two years. In August 2024<\/strong>, the cost of a 32-page passport increased from \u20a635,000 to \u20a650,000. Now, it has doubled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The latest hike comes amid rising inflation<\/strong>, stagnant wages, and worsening living conditions for many Nigerians.<\/p>\n
