Abuja, Nigeria \u2013 August 29, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 The Federal Government<\/strong> has reaffirmed its commitment to ending the 16-year standoff with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)<\/strong>, assuring Nigerians that no further strike actions<\/strong> will disrupt academic activities.<\/p>\n

In an official statement posted on the Federal Ministry of Education\u2019s<\/strong> verified Twitter account, the government said it is engaging ASUU in a realistic, sustainable, and constitutionally aligned<\/strong> process to permanently resolve all lingering disputes.<\/p>\n

\n

Tinubu Directs Education Ministry to Resolve Crisis \u201cOnce and For All\u201d<\/h3>\n

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (CON)<\/strong>, stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu<\/strong> has issued a clear directive to ensure universities remain open and students stay in school.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. President has mandated myself and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai\u2019d Ahmad, to work with all stakeholders to resolve this issue once and for all,\u201d Alausa said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He assured the public that the government is handling the process with the highest level of diligence, transparency, and accountability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

Constructive Dialogue Ongoing \u2014 No Strike Action Expected<\/h3>\n

Addressing growing public concerns about fresh ASUU protests, the Ministry clarified that no industrial action is expected<\/strong>, citing ongoing constructive engagements<\/strong> with union leaders.<\/p>\n

\u201cProgress has already been made on key demands, including the payment and mainstreaming of earned academic allowances,\u201d the Ministry stated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The outstanding 35% wage arrears<\/strong> owed to ASUU members will be addressed in line with payments to other federal public servants.<\/p>\n

\n

High-Level Inter-Ministerial Meeting Held in Abuja<\/h3>\n

A strategic meeting<\/strong> was convened in Abuja, attended by:<\/p>\n

    The meeting focused on a clause-by-clause review<\/strong> of ASUU\u2019s demands and proposals.<\/p>\n

    Technical Committee Inaugurated to Draft New Agreement<\/h3>\n

    A technical committee<\/strong>, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Enitan<\/strong>, has been formed to draft a counterproposal.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe draft will be presented to the Yayale Ahmed-led Committee for further negotiations with ASUU,\u201d the Ministry confirmed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    In a departure from past practices, the Ministry of Justice<\/strong> will be involved from the outset to ensure legal alignment with Nigeria\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n

    \u201cNo More Strikes\u201d \u2014 FG Pledges Long-Term Solution<\/h3>\n

    Minister Alausa reiterated the administration\u2019s resolve to end all forms of industrial action<\/strong> in the education sector.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThis government does not want strikes. President Tinubu strongly believes that young people are the heartbeat of this nation,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    The Minister urged Nigerians to support the process, assuring that a durable, fair, and constitutionally compliant agreement<\/strong> is on the way.<\/p>\n
