Abuja, Nigeria \u2013 August 29, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)<\/strong> has debunked allegations made by the African Democratic Congress (ADC)<\/strong> that the number of pre-registrants in Osun State<\/strong> during the first week of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR)<\/strong> was suspiciously inflated.<\/p>\n

The Commission described the claims as \u201cmisleading and unsupported by historical data.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Osun\u2019s CVR Numbers Align with Previous Patterns \u2014 INEC<\/h3>\n

The ADC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi<\/strong>, questioned the 393,269 pre-registrations recorded in Osun State<\/strong> between August 18 and 24, 2025<\/strong>, claiming the figure defied demographic and electoral logic.<\/p>\n

But Rotimi Oyekanmi<\/strong>, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, countered the allegations in a detailed press release, emphasizing that Osun State has consistently topped CVR charts<\/strong> in previous cycles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2021\/2022, Osun State also led in online pre-registration. These numbers are not new or unusual,\u201d Oyekanmi said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n

INEC Provides Data from 2021\/2022 CVR for Comparison<\/h3>\n

Oyekanmi backed INEC\u2019s position with historical data:<\/p>\n

  • June 28, 2021:<\/strong> 59,331 accounts created within 24 hours of CVR launch<\/li>\n
  • July 12, 2021:<\/strong> 456,909 active accounts, with Osun topping at 154,893<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • August 2021 (Week 8):<\/strong> Osun recorded 365,412<\/strong> pre-registrations<\/li>\n
  • April 2022:<\/strong> Osun had a total of 708,782<\/strong> online pre-registrations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    These figures, he said, show a consistent trend<\/strong>, indicating strong digital participation in Osun State.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Online Registration Still Requires Biometric Completion<\/h3>\n

    INEC also clarified that online pre-registration alone does not guarantee inclusion<\/strong> in the voters’ register. All applicants must still complete biometric capture<\/strong> at official centres.<\/p>\n

    \u201cOnly individuals who meet constitutional requirements and complete the process are added to the final voters’ register,\u201d Oyekanmi noted.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    He reiterated INEC\u2019s commitment to transparency through publicly displayed preliminary registers<\/strong> and its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS)<\/strong>, which eliminates double or fake registrations.<\/p>\n

    Political Actors Urged to Refrain from Unfounded Claims<\/h3>\n

    INEC urged parties and political actors to avoid speculation<\/strong> and rely solely on verifiable data<\/strong> from the Commission\u2019s public platforms.<\/p>\n

    \u201cOur responsibility is not to guess why some states record more registrations, but to ensure every valid registrant is captured,\u201d Oyekanmi added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    INEC cited that:<\/p>\n

    • 14 million new voters<\/strong> were registered ahead of the 2019 General Elections<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • 9.4 million fresh voters<\/strong> were added before the 2023 elections<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Bringing the total voter count<\/strong> to 93,469,008<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      These figures, the Commission said, were the result of due diligence and credible data processing.<\/p>\n
