Senator Ireti Kingibe<\/strong>, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)<\/strong> in Nigeria\u2019s National Assembly, has resigned from the Labour Party (LP)<\/strong> and officially announced her defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC)<\/strong> ahead of the 2027 general elections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja<\/strong> on Saturday, Kingibe described the move as a strategic and deliberate political realignment<\/strong>, pledging full commitment to her new party.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m totally and completely committed to ADC,\u201d she said. \u201cAs senator representing the FCT, I won\u2019t just quietly go and pick up a party card. I will do it with fanfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Defection Tied to Labour Party Factional Crisis<\/h3>\n

Justifying her decision, Kingibe pointed to the deepening factional divide within the Labour Party<\/strong>, noting that the existence of two rival factions<\/strong> provides legal grounds for her defection under Nigeria\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ask you to please read the constitution. There are two factions\u2014clear factions\u2014of the Labour Party,\u201d she emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Kingibe argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)<\/strong> received conflicting results and candidates<\/strong> from both factions, underscoring the breakdown in party unity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you ask me to stay in Labour Party, which faction do you want me to stay in?\u201d she queried.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She insisted that her move was constitutional<\/strong>, citing a provision that allows lawmakers to switch parties without forfeiting their seat if internal divisions exist within their current party.<\/p>\n

Hopeful on ADC and Coalition Growth<\/h3>\n

The senator, who won her seat under the LP in 2023, expressed confidence in the African Democratic Congress<\/strong> as a rising platform within Nigeria\u2019s evolving opposition coalition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that is evolving. You cannot say, while your child is still crawling, that you\u2019re unhappy with how he\u2019ll run. We are growing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Kingibe stressed that her defection was not only lawful but also rooted in a commitment to political development and national service.<\/p>\n
