Nigeria\u2019s rising insecurity tied to hunger, poverty, and food insecurity, say top defence and national security officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa<\/strong>, has warned that poverty and hunger<\/strong> are no longer mere social issues but have become serious national security threats<\/strong> confronting Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Speaking through the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shetimma, at the 14th National Security Seminar<\/strong> held in Abuja on Monday, Musa said the changing face of insecurity in Nigeria demands urgent, people-focused solutions.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cInsecurity today is not only defined by weapons, but also by economic deprivation, food insecurity, and social dislocation,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The seminar was hosted by the Alumni Association of the National Defence College (AANDEC)<\/strong> in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Benue Example Shows Food Crisis Is Now a Security Issue<\/strong><\/h3>\n

General Musa specifically cited Benue State<\/strong>, once Nigeria\u2019s food basket, as an example of how banditry, herder-farmer conflicts, and displacement have crippled agricultural productivity, worsening hunger and economic fragility.<\/p>\n

He noted that illegal farmland occupation and rural insecurity have disrupted farming communities<\/strong>, contributing to food inflation<\/strong>, forced migration<\/strong>, and destabilized regional economies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ribadu: Tinubu Govt Tackling Insecurity Through Social Investments<\/strong><\/h3>\n

National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu<\/strong>, represented by Major General Peter Mala<\/strong>, highlighted ongoing federal efforts to break the cycle of poverty and insecurity<\/strong>, including agriculture reforms<\/strong>, expanded social programmes<\/strong>, and strategic security operations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHunger and deprivation are not just humanitarian concerns; they are drivers of crime, violence, and instability,\u201d Ribadu warned.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He called for collaborative, multidimensional approaches<\/strong> to security, emphasizing that the link between poverty and violence<\/strong> must be severed to achieve lasting peace.<\/p>\n

Minister of Defence Urges People-Centric Security Strategy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In his remarks, Defence Minister Muhammad Badaru<\/strong> emphasized the need for a people-driven approach<\/strong> to addressing Nigeria\u2019s worsening insecurity.<\/p>\n
