Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has raised alarm over the state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the opposition party risks becoming a \u201cpolitical carcass\u201d if urgent action is not taken to revive it.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists after a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Ikoyi-Lagos residence, Fayose declared, \u201cThe PDP is in serious trouble. If something drastic is not done, the party will become a carcass \u2014 that\u2019s the gospel truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite rising defections from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Fayose made it clear he has no intentions of switching parties.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will not move to any other political party \u2014 not even the APC,\u201d he stated firmly. \u201cI\u2019m 65 years old this year. Defection is personal, and I respect those who moved, but I\u2019m not one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
While noting that he is no longer at the center of national politics, Fayose emphasized his previous role as a strong voice in opposition during his time as Ekiti State governor. \u201cI\u2019ve played my part. Today, I can only support from the sidelines. But I must speak the truth \u2014 without urgent reforms, the PDP is fading.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fayose reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, saying, \u201cI\u2019d rather quit politics than leave the PDP.\u201d<\/p>\n
Interestingly, the former governor also praised President Tinubu\u2019s performance so far, highlighting the courage shown in addressing Nigeria\u2019s complex challenges. \u201cNo one expects a miracle overnight, but for what he has done so far, we must commend him. He\u2019s taken bold steps, especially on the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fayose revealed that his support for Tinubu predates the 2023 election, adding that leadership transcends party lines when national interest is at stake.<\/p>\n
On the situation in Ekiti, Fayose lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji\u2019s performance and stressed the need for unity in the state. \u201cAll former governors are united in our support for Oyebanji. In Ekiti, our state comes first \u2014 beyond party politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also said he had again sought President Tinubu\u2019s assurance about his continued support for Governor Oyebanji amid political speculation.<\/p>\n
