Somebody without character will easily abandon you when <em data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"1789\">his<\/em> interest is threatened\u2014not when the interests of the masses are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"2106\">He argued that many of the defectors lack the courage to remain in opposition, where resources are scarcer and public scrutiny is tougher. For them, aligning with the ruling party is a <strong data-start=\"2042\" data-end=\"2072\">means of self-preservation<\/strong> rather than national development.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2111\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2158\"><strong data-start=\"2117\" data-end=\"2158\">Doubting Political Clout of Defectors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2160\" data-end=\"2474\">The former SGF also questioned the real electoral influence of many high-profile politicians, including governors and party stalwarts who have switched allegiance. He cited examples of <strong data-start=\"2345\" data-end=\"2371\">Delta and Borno States<\/strong>, where despite the incumbency advantage, <strong data-start=\"2413\" data-end=\"2473\">key figures failed to sway the electorate in their favor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2476\" data-end=\"2681\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2681\">\u201cEven serving governors and vice-presidential candidates could not deliver their home states. That tells you something\u2014that real political power lies with the people, not necessarily with the defectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2683\" data-end=\"2686\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2688\" data-end=\"2718\"><strong data-start=\"2692\" data-end=\"2718\">Unconcerned About 2027<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2918\">Looking ahead to the <strong data-start=\"2741\" data-end=\"2767\">2027 general elections<\/strong>, Lawal said those opposed to the APC are <strong data-start=\"2809\" data-end=\"2838\">not worried by defections<\/strong>, stating that the true test of popularity and relevance lies at the ballot box.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2920\" data-end=\"3097\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"3097\">\u201cWe are not bothered about defections. It will continue to happen. But in 2027, we\u2019ll go to the ballot boxes and we\u2019ll see the results. We are confident that it\u2019s immaterial.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3099\" data-end=\"3434\">Lawal\u2019s remarks come at a time when several opposition figures have recently joined the APC, fueling speculations about realignments ahead of the next electoral cycle.
