{"id":7893,"date":"2025-05-21T19:15:30","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T19:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shakamomodu.com\/?p=7893"},"modified":"2025-05-21T19:15:30","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T19:15:30","slug":"adelabu-blasts-discos-warns-of-sector-collapse-without-urgent-investment-in-power-distribution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shakamomodu.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/21\/adelabu-blasts-discos-warns-of-sector-collapse-without-urgent-investment-in-power-distribution\/","title":{"rendered":"Adelabu Blasts Discos, Warns of Sector Collapse Without Urgent Investment in Power Distribution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"1101\"><strong data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"840\">Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom \u2014 May 21, 2025<\/strong> | Nigeria\u2019s Minister of Power, <strong data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"897\">Chief Adebayo Adelabu<\/strong>, has issued a stern warning over the state of the country\u2019s electricity distribution sector, describing power Distribution Companies (Discos) as the <strong data-start=\"1047\" data-end=\"1065\">\u201cweakest link\u201d<\/strong> in the nation\u2019s energy value chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1364\">Speaking at a Senate Committee on Power retreat, Adelabu lambasted the Discos for <strong data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1247\">poor performance, chronic underinvestment, low remittances<\/strong>, and failing infrastructure\u2014factors he said threaten to undermine recent gains in power generation and transmission.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1523\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1368\" data-end=\"1523\">\u201cWe need to get tough with the Discos. They\u2019ve disappointed Nigerians and are now frustrating the gains made in generation and transmission,\u201d Adelabu said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1528\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1593\"><strong data-start=\"1534\" data-end=\"1593\">Sector at Risk: Low Revenue and Unsustainable Subsidies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1595\" data-end=\"1791\">According to the minister, despite reforms and increased tariffs boosting sector liquidity from <strong data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"1739\">\u20a61 trillion in 2023 to \u20a61.7 trillion in 2024<\/strong>, the distribution companies remain underperforming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1793\" data-end=\"1853\">He revealed stark regional disparities in Disco remittances:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"2060\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"1938\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"1938\"><strong data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"1875\">Northern Discos<\/strong> remitted only <strong data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1897\">30%<\/strong> of their \u20a6408.86 billion bill in Q4 2024<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"2060\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"2060\"><strong data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"1960\">Southern Discos<\/strong> fared better with <strong data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"1986\">67%<\/strong> remittance, with <strong data-start=\"2004\" data-end=\"2045\">Lagos-based Discos accounting for 70%<\/strong> of that figure<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2274\">He described the situation as \u201cunsustainable,\u201d citing a <strong data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2160\">\u20a6200 billion monthly subsidy shortfall<\/strong> and a <strong data-start=\"2167\" data-end=\"2190\">\u20a64 trillion backlog<\/strong> owed to generation companies\u2014\u20a61.94 trillion of which was accumulated in 2024 alone.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2276\" data-end=\"2279\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2281\" data-end=\"2330\"><strong data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2330\">Ailing Infrastructure and Metering Crisis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2564\">Adelabu said the lack of infrastructure investment\u2014especially in areas outside economic hubs\u2014has deepened inequality in power access, noting that many Discos used bank loans for asset acquisition rather than infrastructure upgrades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2721\">He cited the <strong data-start=\"2579\" data-end=\"2606\">persistent metering gap<\/strong> as a key driver of <strong data-start=\"2626\" data-end=\"2684\">revenue loss, electricity theft, and consumer distrust<\/strong>. To address this, the government is:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2722\" data-end=\"2967\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2722\" data-end=\"2795\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2724\" data-end=\"2795\">Rolling out the <strong data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"2795\">\u20a6700 billion Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2796\" data-end=\"2874\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2798\" data-end=\"2874\">Partnering with the <strong data-start=\"2818\" data-end=\"2832\">World Bank<\/strong> to deliver <strong data-start=\"2844\" data-end=\"2866\">4.3 million meters<\/strong> by 2025<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2875\" data-end=\"2967\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2877\" data-end=\"2967\">Already deployed <strong data-start=\"2894\" data-end=\"2911\">75,000 meters<\/strong> in April 2024, with another <strong data-start=\"2940\" data-end=\"2967\">200,000 expected in May<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2969\" data-end=\"3073\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2971\" data-end=\"3073\">\u201cClosing the metering gap is fundamental to fair billing and financial sustainability,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3075\" data-end=\"3078\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3080\" data-end=\"3140\"><strong data-start=\"3084\" data-end=\"3140\">Grid Stabilised, But Distribution Still a Bottleneck<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3142\" data-end=\"3344\">Despite these challenges, Adelabu reported that the national grid has <strong data-start=\"3212\" data-end=\"3247\">remained stable throughout 2025<\/strong>, with <strong data-start=\"3254\" data-end=\"3278\">no recorded collapse<\/strong>. This, he said, was due to hard work and infrastructure upgrades:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3345\" data-end=\"3500\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3345\" data-end=\"3429\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3347\" data-end=\"3429\"><strong data-start=\"3347\" data-end=\"3376\">61 transformers installed<\/strong> in 2024 by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3500\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3432\" data-end=\"3500\">Additional <strong data-start=\"3443\" data-end=\"3476\">13 high-capacity transformers<\/strong> installed in early 2025<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3502\" data-end=\"3696\">Still, he warned that without <strong data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3578\">urgent capital injection into distribution<\/strong>, recent improvements\u2014including a historic <strong data-start=\"3621\" data-end=\"3667\">6,003MW generation milestone in March 2025<\/strong>\u2014would not benefit consumers.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3698\" data-end=\"3701\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3703\" data-end=\"3752\"><strong data-start=\"3707\" data-end=\"3752\">Legislation, Vandalism &amp; TCN Underfunding<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3754\" data-end=\"3983\">Adelabu urged the National Assembly to <strong data-start=\"3793\" data-end=\"3815\">pass stricter laws<\/strong> against <strong data-start=\"3824\" data-end=\"3871\">vandalism, power theft, illegal connections<\/strong>, and meter tampering. He argued that such crimes should be treated as <strong data-start=\"3942\" data-end=\"3963\">criminal offences<\/strong>, not civil matters.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3985\" data-end=\"4138\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3987\" data-end=\"4138\">\u201cOur towers are toppled by saboteurs and meters are tampered with. We need stricter laws and public vigilance to protect these assets,\u201d Adelabu warned.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4140\" data-end=\"4388\">He also called for better funding for <strong data-start=\"4178\" data-end=\"4185\">TCN<\/strong>, which he said currently operates <strong data-start=\"4220\" data-end=\"4266\">only on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)<\/strong> that \u201ccan\u2019t even pay salaries.\u201d Adelabu recommended that the agency be <strong data-start=\"4338\" data-end=\"4387\">accommodated in federal budget appropriations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4390\" data-end=\"4393\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"4395\" data-end=\"4435\"><strong data-start=\"4399\" data-end=\"4435\">Power Plans for Northern Nigeria<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4437\" data-end=\"4518\">Adelabu announced targeted efforts to boost supply in underserved northern areas:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4519\" data-end=\"4679\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4519\" data-end=\"4578\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4521\" data-end=\"4578\">Development of the <strong data-start=\"4540\" data-end=\"4578\">1,000MW Makurdi hydropower project<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4579\" data-end=\"4679\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4581\" data-end=\"4679\">Revival of the <strong data-start=\"4596\" data-end=\"4626\">215MW Kaduna Thermal Plant<\/strong>, currently 87% complete but abandoned for five years<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4681\" data-end=\"4817\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4683\" data-end=\"4817\">\u201cWe are committed to correcting regional imbalances and ensuring no Nigerian is left behind in our energy reforms,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4819\" data-end=\"4822\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"4824\" data-end=\"4879\"><strong data-start=\"4828\" data-end=\"4879\">Conclusion: Restructuring and Reform Inevitable<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4881\" data-end=\"5055\">Adelabu concluded with a warning: <strong data-start=\"4915\" data-end=\"4964\">underperforming Discos may face restructuring<\/strong>, and the government would <strong data-start=\"4991\" data-end=\"5025\">enforce performance benchmarks<\/strong> more strictly moving forward.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5057\" data-end=\"5205\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5059\" data-end=\"5205\">\u201cWithout urgent reform in distribution, the billions spent on generation and transmission will fail to deliver results.
